Graphite, mixed media on paper
114 x 58 cm approx
This large scale series of mixed media drawings were produced after one of Ian Murphy’s visits to the Forbidden City in Beijing. He particularly focused on the dramatic and symbolic figures so prevalent
on the pagoda roof lines and doorway entrances, and sought to draw them with a powerful intensity to emphasise their intended guardian status.
The mixed media approach in style is again indicative of the tactile nature of the sculpted forms but also starts to embrace Ian Murphy’s passion for antiquity and historical character. Once again, the dramatic mood and atmosphere that is such an important feature in his work, is brought to the fore in this series of drawings.
