Ian Murphy’s visit to the small, water based, village Wuzhen in Zhejiang Province, China, was indeed a very significant, and productive, element to his travels through China.

The sketchbook recordings were very prolific, and mark his fascination with the historic village and have since lead to a large number of development drawings and paintings.

“Silent Walkway” was one of the first pieces produced in the series and describes the solitude he felt as he walked down the path towards one of the amazing canal bridges. Using the flimsy shelter as a canopy to protect him from the misty rain, he utilised the fragile structure as an all-important foreground shape to enhance the waterway and surrounding buildings.
