Graphite and collage on paper
Ian Murphy’s visit to the small, water based village Wuzhen in Zhejiang Province, China, was indeed a very significant and productive element to his travels through China.
The sketchbook recordings were very prolific, and mark his fascination with the historic village and have since lead to a large number of development drawings and paintings. This composition, taken from a viewpoint high on a building, allows the viewer to see beyond the fragile tiled roof and through into the
atmospheric distance. This is a heavily toned drawing, which is small in scale but still contains a very strong sense of character.
