Ian Murphy’s visit to the small, water based, village Wuzhen in Zhejiang Province, China, was indeed a very significant and productive element to his travels through China.
The sketchbook recordings were very prolific, and mark his fascination with the historic village and have since lead to a large number of development drawings and paintings. In this low level image Ian Murphy describes the frailty of the small, layered properties on the side of the canal and the strong historical character of the imposing bridge.
